Lower Kanaha is a protected lagoon located on Maui's north shore, characterized by shallow, clear water with visible reef formations and sandy bottom areas. The spot lies directly adjacent to Kahului Airport, with the coastline oriented northeast, facing the Pacific. The lagoon is bordered by dense vegetation, coconut palms, and a narrow beach. This is a beginner-friendly location offering minimal wave activity but reliable wind conditions. Best conditions occur with northeast to northwest winds that run parallel to the shore. The shallow water (typically 1-3 meters) and reef systems provide natural wave damping, making it ideal for learning kitesurfing. However, the low average wind reliability (6.2%) and minimal wave height (0.65m average) limit the window for quality sessions. Water conditions are generally light and manageable. Kiters should be aware of airport operations, exercise caution around reef areas, and use the wider beach access points for launching and landing. Not suitable for advanced riders seeking challenging conditions.
