Army Bay

Army Bay is a sheltered bay on the Rodney Peninsula near Auckland, New Zealand. The bay opens toward the northeast, with a residential suburb occupying the southern shoreline and pastoral farmland to the south and west. The northern shore features forested headlands and rocky areas. The water body is semi-protected, transitioning from the darker deeper waters of the outer bay to shallow turquoise waters near the beach. Best wind direction is from the northwest (315°), providing side-shore conditions. Given the low wind reliability (8%) and small average wave size (0.51m), this spot is suited for beginners and lighter wind days. Water temperatures are cool (15.9°C) requiring appropriate wetsuits. The bay's enclosed nature limits wave generation but provides a safer learning environment with minimal swell. Kiters should monitor tidal conditions, avoid the shallow near-shore zone, and be aware of the stream outlet and potential residential area boat traffic. The spot works best during autumn and spring wind patterns.
