Cabarete Bay

Cabarete Bay is a protected crescent-shaped bay on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, facing northeast toward the Atlantic. The bay is bordered by residential and commercial development on the western and southern shores, with extensive beach infrastructure. The water body combines characteristics of a shallow lagoon in protected areas with deeper bay waters toward the northeast opening. The sheltered bay configuration provides wind acceleration effects while the reef and shallow areas offer some protection from large ocean swells. The consistent trade winds (predominantly from the east-northeast) create reliable side-shore conditions for kitesurfing, particularly with winds from the southeast to east. The spot suits beginners to intermediate riders due to manageable wave heights (1-2m average) and relatively protected waters, though the development density and boat traffic require awareness of congestion. Best conditions occur during winter months when trade winds are most consistent. The shallow sandy bottom in some areas aids progression for newer kiters, but knowledge of local reef and current patterns is essential.
