Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is a sheltered lagoon system on Sri Lanka's northwest coast, protected from open ocean by a narrow sand spit. The lagoon faces south toward the Indian Ocean, with the beach barrier running roughly north-south. Water is shallow and green-tinged, indicating sediment and organic matter. The spot type is lagoon-based, offering calmer conditions than open ocean alternatives. Best wind conditions occur with easterly winds (90°), which are side-shore and allow kiting along the beach spit. The lagoon's shallow depth and restricted fetch make it suitable for beginners and learners, though water conditions are rough and visibility is poor. Low wind reliability (32.6%) and modest average wind (9.7 knots) require careful session planning. Hazards include unmarked sandbars, shallow mudflats, and rocky features visible in the water. The narrow entrance channel between lagoon and ocean can create localized currents. Vegetation and mangrove areas border the lagoon. Best suited for kiters still developing skills or those seeking protected, flat-water training conditions during favorable wind windows.
