Arugam Bay - The Point

Arugam Bay is a crescent-shaped bay located on Sri Lanka's east coast, characterized by a sandy beach flanked by vegetated headlands. The bay opens to the southeast, with a narrow entrance between rocky points. Water conditions are typically calm within the bay, making it suitable for learning and practicing kitesurfing fundamentals. The curved topography creates variable wind conditions depending on direction and intensity. Side-shore winds from the northeast are ideal for safe riding across the bay width. The spot features shallow to moderate water depths with sandy bottom in most areas. Given the low average wind reliability (1.8%) and modest wave heights (0.97m), this location is best suited for light-wind practice and progression of technique rather than high-performance sessions. Beginners will find the protected bay environment forgiving, though the headlands create turbulent zones. Local knowledge of seasonal wind patterns is valuable, as monsoon influences vary significantly throughout the year.
