Baie des Galions

Baie des Galions is a protected bay on Madagascar's east coast, characterized by a shallow lagoon system separated from the open Indian Ocean by a natural sand barrier. The bay opens toward the northeast, with the coastline oriented at approximately 45° northeast. The spot features a distinct two-zone layout: a sheltered lagoon with relatively calm conditions suitable for skill development, and direct ocean access with more substantial wave exposure. The visible reef structure and shallow lagoon areas provide natural wave shaping but require careful navigation. Best conditions occur with northwest to north winds (300-360°) providing side-shore conditions along the main beach. The moderate wave height (1.85m average) and low wind reliability (12.7%) suggest this is a seasonal destination. Intermediate kiters will find the most suitable conditions, as the lagoon offers protection while the outer bay provides more wave opportunity. Water type classification as rough indicates significant tidal influence and possible current complexity. Local knowledge of channel navigation is advisable.
