Bantham

Bantham is a bay-style kitesurfing spot located on the South Devon coast where the River Avon meets the English Channel. The coastline faces southwest toward the open Atlantic, with a sandy beach backed by residential development and agricultural land. The spot features a substantial sheltered bay with complex bathymetry including sandbanks, a river estuary, and rocky points on both sides. The relatively modest wind reliability (29.5%) and small average wave heights (1.09m) indicate this is primarily a wind-dependent spot rather than a wave-focused location. Side-shore conditions occur with northeast or southwest winds. The bay's sheltered nature provides calmer, more manageable waters compared to exposed open-ocean breaks, making it suitable for intermediate kiters developing skills. However, tidal currents, shallow areas, and rocky hazards require local knowledge. Best sessions occur during neap tides with consistent winds. This spot is better suited for technical freestyle and light wind practice than wave riding.
