Berbera Spit

Berbera Spit is a coastal delta formation in northwestern Somalia where sediment deposits have created an elongated sand peninsula extending northeast into the Gulf of Aden. The spot features shallow brackish lagoon waters separated from deeper open ocean by a natural sand barrier. The delta's complex geography creates variable bathymetry with sandbars and channels that shift seasonally. The site suits intermediate kiters familiar with shallow-water navigation and variable wind conditions. Best winds come from the northeast (45°), providing side-shore conditions along the spit's northwest-facing shoreline. The lagoon offers protected waters compared to the gulf side, though depths can be unpredictable. Average wind speeds of 8.8 knots are modest, and the 21% wind reliability means sessions are inconsistent. Wave activity is minimal (0.58m average), making this more suitable for flatwater technique work than wave riding. Water temperature around 30.8°C is warm year-round. Kiters should carefully scout conditions before entry due to shallow obstacles and verify tide state to understand depth variations.
