El Marenyet

El Marenyet is a sheltered lagoon system on Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast, characterized by extensive agricultural irrigation canals and protected shallow waters. The spot consists of interconnected waterways separated from the open sea by a narrow sandy barrier, visible in the satellite imagery. The lagoon's eastern orientation and limited fetch distance make it naturally sheltered, resulting in very modest wind and wave conditions (0.43m average). This is a beginner-friendly location suitable for learning, with minimal swell exposure and forgiving shallow waters. The primary challenge is the extremely low wind reliability (4.1%), requiring patience and selective visit timing. Kiters should be aware of soft bottom conditions, canal current flows from the irrigation system, and scattered infrastructure. The protected nature of the lagoon makes it safer for skill development but limits advanced progression. Best conditions occur with northerly winds approaching side-shore (parallel to the coast). Local knowledge of water levels and irrigation schedules is valuable.
