Elounda is a protected bay on Crete's northeast coast, featuring a shallow lagoon separated from the main bay by a narrow isthmus. The spot consists of two distinct water zones: an inner lagoon with very light, choppy conditions and an outer bay with slightly more exposure. The lagoon's shallow depth and enclosed nature provide natural wind funneling but limit swell development. Best conditions occur with southeasterly winds (120-150°) which blow side-shore across the bay entrance. The extremely low wind reliability (20.8%) and small average wave size (0.65m) make this suitable for beginners and light-wind specialists seeking flat-water progression. Water remains warm year-round (average 19.9°C). Kiters should monitor sandbar positions and avoid the narrow entrance channel during strong flows. The spot works best during thermal afternoon winds rather than consistent sea breezes. Limited fetch means wave development is minimal, making this primarily a flatwater learning destination rather than a wave-riding venue.
