Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is a sheltered bay located on Queensland's southeastern coast, facing northeast toward the water. The spot features a sandy beach backed by dense vegetation and a residential area, with relatively flat, protected waters. The bay's geography creates a constrained fetch, resulting in minimal wave development (average 0.21m) and very low wind reliability (4.4%). Wind conditions favor side-shore approaches from the southeast or northwest relative to the bay's orientation. The spot suits absolute beginners and light-wind enthusiasts due to its flat water conditions and sheltered nature. Water depths are generally shallow with sandbars present, requiring local knowledge for navigation. The proximal tree line and residential development can create turbulent wind patterns and reduce consistency. Best conditions occur during seasonal wind patterns when stronger breezes reach the bay. Kiters should be aware of boat traffic and check tide conditions before sessions, as shallow areas can become very restricted at low tide.
