About This Spot
Kashiwazaki is a protected lagoon system on Japan's northwest coast, located behind breakwaters that create a sheltered water environment. The spot consists of shallow, enclosed water separated from the open ocean by concrete barriers and natural sandbars. The lagoon faces northwest toward the main body of water, with residential and industrial development immediately adjacent to the eastern shore. The protected nature of the lagoon provides relatively small, predictable waves and wind patterns. Best conditions occur with northeast or east winds that blow parallel to the coast, creating side-shore conditions. The extremely low wind reliability (5.5%) and modest average wind speed (5.4 knots) make this a marginal kitesurfing location suitable primarily for light-wind specialists or beginners practicing in protected conditions. Shallow water depth and numerous man-made structures require careful navigation. This spot works best during stronger weather windows but remains underpowered for most of the year.
