Mondello

Mondello is a bay located on the northern coast of Sicily near Palermo, characterized by a gently sloping sandy beach facing northeast into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The spot receives protection from the surrounding coastline, creating a sheltered bay environment with light swell conditions averaging 0.63m. The water transitions from turquoise near shore to darker blue offshore, indicating depth changes typical of Mediterranean coastal geography. The bay is extensively used for recreation with numerous moored boats visible throughout the water. This makes it a congested area requiring careful navigation. Wind reliability is notably low at 2.5%, with average winds of 4.6 knots—insufficient for consistent kitesurfing. Best conditions require northeast to northwest winds (side-shore to offshore from the visible northeast coastline orientation), ideally exceeding 8-10 knots. Mondello suits beginners on rare optimal wind days due to shallow, protected waters and minimal wave exposure. However, boat traffic and low wind statistics make it unreliable for dedicated session planning. The spot is better suited for flat-water practice than wave riding.
