About This Spot
Playa de Carelmapu is a small beach break located on the western coast of Los Lagos Region in southern Chile. The coastline faces west toward the Pacific Ocean with a rocky, forested shoreline characteristic of Patagonian geography. The spot receives consistent ocean swell but extremely low wind reliability at only 3.3%, making it impractical for regular kitesurfing. Average winds of 5.0 knots are below the 10-12 knots typically required for the sport. The beach is backed by dense coniferous forest that limits land-based infrastructure and access. Visible rocky outcrops along the shore present navigation hazards. Water temperatures around 10.7°C require thermal protection year-round. Wave heights average 1.13m, providing small, manageable conditions suitable for beginners when wind is present. Side-shore winds from the north would be ideal, but the infrequency of adequate wind makes this spot unreliable for dedicated kitesurfing sessions. Better suited for experienced local knowledge or as a secondary option during regional wind events.
