Portbail

Portbail is a shallow, protected bay located on the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France. The spot consists of a large enclosed bay with extensive mudflats, sandbars, and shallow channels that are heavily influenced by significant tidal fluctuations. The northeastern shore faces toward the bay, creating a northeast-facing water body bordered by residential development and agricultural land. This is a lagoon-style spot best suited for beginners and light-wind specialists. Wind from the northwest (315°) provides ideal side-shore conditions. The primary appeal is the protected, flat-water environment with minimal wave energy, making it suitable for progression and light-wind sessions. Water remains choppy due to tidal flows and shallow bathymetry rather than wave action. Kiters must have strong local knowledge of tidal schedules, as mudflat exposure severely limits usable riding area during low tide. The low wind reliability (37.4%) and modest average wind speed (11.2 knots) mean sessions are seasonal and weather-dependent. Best conditions occur during higher tides with northwest winds.
