Pottuvil Dunes

Pottuvil Dunes is located on Sri Lanka's east coast near the Arugambe lagoon system, featuring a sandy beach with shallow water zones and vegetated areas behind the shoreline. The spot is characterized by gentle beach breaks in a protected setting. The coastline orientation toward the southeast means ideal side-shore wind would come from the northeast (approximately 45°). However, with only 1.6% wind reliability and average winds of 4.8 knots, consistent riding conditions are rare. Wave heights average less than 1 meter, making this suitable primarily for beginners or when practicing in minimal wind. The shallow lagoon areas and nearby vegetation present navigation hazards. This spot works best during monsoon seasons when wind and swell patterns shift. The protected nature of the lagoon makes it safer for learning but limits wave quality. Water temperature remains warm year-round at approximately 28°C. Most visits will require patience waiting for adequate wind, making it better suited as a secondary spot rather than a primary destination.
