Punta El Tunal

Punta El Tunal is a protected lagoon system located on Venezuela's northern coast, characterized by shallow turquoise water enclosed by a narrow sandy spit. The lagoon opens to the northwest with a curved coastline providing some wind shadow protection. This is a sheltered spot with minimal wave exposure and very small average swell (0.62m), making it suitable primarily for light-wind riding and progression. The shallow water depth throughout the lagoon reduces consequences for mistakes but limits maneuver space. With only 22.1% wind reliability and average winds under 10 knots, consistent riding days are rare. Best conditions occur with northeast or north winds approaching side-shore. The limited fetch and protected nature of the water mean choppy, confused conditions are common rather than organized swells. This spot suits beginners and those seeking flat-water practice areas, though sustained wind conditions are inconsistent.
