Raglan

Raglan is a beach break located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island, facing directly west toward the Tasman Sea. The spot features a dramatic black sand beach backed by rocky headlands and a shallow lagoon system. The exposed western orientation creates consistent swell, but the low wind reliability (9.9%) and modest average wind (7.0 knots) suggest this is primarily a wave-focused destination rather than a dedicated kitesurfing location. When wind does arrive from the north or south, it provides side-shore conditions. The shallow lagoon and protected beach areas offer calmer conditions suitable for beginners when adequate wind is present. However, the combination of low average wind speeds, strong prevailing ocean swell, and coastal hazards means this spot is better suited for wave riders than dedicated kiters. Best approached by intermediate kiters during north or south wind events with swell windows. Local knowledge of tidal patterns and current behavior is essential.
