About This Spot
Ria de Alvor is a shallow coastal lagoon in southern Portugal's Algarve region, characterized by extensive tidal flats, sand bars, and clear shallow waters. The lagoon opens to the Atlantic via a narrow eastward-facing channel. The western shore shows significant residential and aquaculture development (fish farms visible in imagery), while eastern and northern shores are less developed. Water conditions are extremely sheltered with minimal wave development and very low wind reliability. Best wind direction is southeasterly (135°), providing side-shore conditions parallel to the coast. The lagoon functions as a light-swell, flat-water environment suitable primarily for beginners practicing in controlled conditions. Kiters should expect very marginal wind most days and must navigate shallow water and sand bars. Access may be limited due to private property and aquaculture operations. This spot is better suited for progression in light winds rather than serious progression training.
Hazards & Safety
Shallow water throughout lagoon - maximum depth appears 2-3 meters
Extensive sand bars and tidal flats visible in lighter colored areas
Residential and aquaculture infrastructure on western shore - limited launch access
Narrow channel entrance restricts exit to open water
Tidal current effects in channel visible in water color patterns
Low wind reliability (2.4%) - very marginal wind conditions
Very small average wave height (0.65m) - flatwater conditions
