Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay is a protected bay located along the Western Australian coastline facing northwest toward the Indian Ocean. The bay features a distinctive crescent-shaped configuration with a sandy beach at its base and shallow turquoise waters characteristic of tropical Australian bays. The coastline orientation (NW-facing) provides natural protection from southwesterly swells while remaining exposed to northeasterly wind patterns. This spot functions as a sheltered lagoon environment with shallow banks and visible underwater features. Ideal conditions occur with northeast to east winds that provide side-shore flows parallel to the coast. The shallow, calm bay waters make this suitable for beginner to intermediate kiters seeking protected conditions. However, the limited wind reliability (31.3%) and modest average wind speed (10.2 knots) require patience. Kiters must account for variable depths, submerged hazards, and tidal effects. The sandy bottom provides some forgiveness for learners. Morning thermals and afternoon sea breezes are preferable to relying on consistent trade winds. Best suited to skill-building sessions rather than high-performance riding.
