Santa Marta

Santa Marta Bay is a protected coastal area in northern Colombia where a man-made marina and breakwater system create a sheltered kitefloating zone. The bay faces south toward the Caribbean Sea, with industrial port facilities and container vessels occupying the northern sector. The spot features a curved breakwater that deflects wave energy, resulting in choppy short-period waves averaging 1 meter. Wind reliability is extremely low at 0.9%, with average winds of only 4.6 knots—below minimum requirements for most kitesurfing. The eastern wind direction (90°) would provide side-shore conditions relative to the south-facing coastline. This location suits only beginner-level kiters during rare stronger wind windows, as consistent conditions are insufficient for progression. The protected bay reduces swell but also limits wave quality. Significant hazards include commercial vessel traffic, breakwater obstacles, and shallow depths near the marina. Water conditions are rough-chop rather than organized swell, making this primarily a light-wind training location rather than a destination spot.
