Stinson Beach

Stinson Beach is a north-facing sandy beach break located on the Marin County coast of California, approximately 20 miles north of San Francisco. The beach sits at the edge of the Pacific Ocean with open ocean fetch, bordered by residential development and forested hills. This is a mellow beach break suitable primarily for beginners and light-wind enthusiasts. The spot faces north-northwest toward the ocean, making northeast to east winds ideal for side-shore conditions. However, the location suffers from very low wind reliability (1.6%) and consistently small average waves (1.61m), making it challenging for regular practice. Best conditions typically occur during stronger winter swells or in afternoon sea breezes. The spot is most practical during moderate northeast winds when side-shore conditions align. Water temperatures around 13°C require wetsuits year-round. Kiters should be aware of shallow areas near shore and rocky sections visible along the beach. Access and facilities are available, but the spot's marginal wind and wave conditions make it better suited for light-wind sessions rather than consistent training.
