Tybee Island

Tybee Island is a barrier island located at the mouth of the Savannah River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The spot consists of a sheltered bay area with sandy beaches and shallow water protected by the island's geography. The western side features extensive marshlands and oyster beds typical of Georgia's coastal ecosystem, while the eastern face opens to the Atlantic with deeper water channels. This location offers relatively protected conditions suitable for beginners due to limited wave exposure and shallow water depths in the bay area. The sheltered lagoon-like conditions provide manageable wind and water dynamics. Best conditions occur with northeast to northwest winds (around 315°), which provide side-shore conditions parallel to the beach. The shallow water and soft bottom make this forgiving for learning, though tidal movements and occasional boat traffic require awareness. Wind reliability data suggests inconsistent conditions, so sessions should be planned around optimal wind windows. The spot works best during incoming tides when water depth increases.
