Witbank Dam is an inland reservoir lake in South Africa's Mpumalanga Province, offering a sheltered freshwater kitesurfing environment. The lake features a primary western shoreline facing water, with developed residential areas on the southern and eastern banks. The spot is characterized by relatively flat water conditions typical of enclosed water bodies, making it suitable for beginners and intermediate riders seeking to practice in calm, controlled conditions. The southern shore near the residential development provides the most accessible launch areas. Best conditions occur with northerly winds for side-shore sailing. However, the location experiences very low wind reliability at 2.3% with average winds of only 5.4 knots, significantly limiting riding opportunities. Water temperatures average 17.6°C, requiring seasonal thermal protection. The lake's limited fetch distance prevents swell development, resulting in flat-water conditions. Kiters should be aware of shallow areas, particularly along the eastern shore, and avoid the residential marina zones with potential boat traffic. This spot works best as a training location during windier periods rather than a primary destination.
