Sandymount Strand

Sandymount Strand is a large, flat beach break located on Dublin Bay's south side, facing northeast toward the Irish Sea. The extensive sandy and muddy foreshore is exposed at low tide, creating a lagoon-like environment with shallow water and tidal flats. This spot is characterized by very small average wave heights (0.53m) and choppy water conditions typical of sheltered bay locations. The spot suits beginners due to minimal wave hazards and gentle conditions, though low wind reliability (20.1%) and modest average winds (8.9 knots) make consistent sessions challenging. Northwest winds provide side-shore conditions optimal for the northeast-facing shore. The extensive shallow water and mudflats at low tide offer safety for progression but require awareness of tide timing and soft bottom characteristics. Water temperature averages 11.2°C, necessitating thermal protection. The proximity to Dublin's urban area and potential shipping traffic in Dublin Bay should be considered.
