Whitireia Park Bay

Whitireia Park Bay is a semi-enclosed bay on the North Island coast of New Zealand, characterized by a northeast-facing shoreline. The bay is bounded by rocky, vegetated headlands on the western side and developed residential areas on the eastern shore. The water body receives moderate fetch from the northeast and displays rough-chop conditions typical of exposed coastal bays. Wind reliability is relatively low at 35.4%, with average winds of 10.4 knots and modest wave heights around 0.96m, suggesting this spot functions best during stronger wind events. The presence of rock formations, shallow nearshore areas, and variable depth make this suitable for intermediate kiters with good local knowledge. Best conditions occur with southeasterly to southwesterly winds providing side-shore to slightly offshore flow. The sheltered nature of the bay reduces wave size but can create gusty conditions due to terrain interaction. Kiters should exercise caution around the western headland where currents may accelerate, and be aware of coastal development and potential vessel traffic along the eastern shore.
