Lagoa de Santo André

Lagoa de Santo André is a shallow coastal lagoon in southwestern Portugal, separated from the Atlantic by a narrow sandy barrier beach. The lagoon opens to the west toward the ocean, with residential development occupying the eastern and southern shorelines. The spot offers protected water conditions within the lagoon, making it suitable for beginners due to reduced wave exposure and limited fetch. However, the very low wind reliability (4.8%) and modest average wind speeds (6.4 knots) present significant challenges for consistent kitesurfing sessions. The shallow lagoon water limits wave development and creates hazards from submerged rocks and vegetation. Side-shore winds from the north or south would be ideal, with northerly winds (0°) being preferable for the western-facing lagoon entrance. This spot is best suited to lighter-wind specialists or beginners practicing in protected conditions. Kiters should be aware of the lagoon's shallow nature, limited space, and the frequent wind lulls that characterize this location.
