São João & Cova do Vapor

São João and Cova do Vapor is a sheltered beach break located on Portugal's west coast near Lisbon. The spot faces west-northwest toward the Atlantic, with a long sandy beach backed by protected lagoon areas and residential development. A breakwater system and rocky headland at the northern end provide some protection from larger Atlantic swells. The area features a shallow lagoon separated from open ocean by sand bars, creating variable conditions depending on tide and sandbank configuration. Best conditions occur with northerly winds (around 15°) providing reliable side-shore flow parallel to the beach. Water temperatures average 17.7°C year-round. The low wind reliability (5.2%) and modest average wave height (1.65m) suggest this is primarily a light-wind, beginner-friendly spot suitable for practice and progression. Kiters should be aware of the breakwater structures, shallow areas near the lagoon, and boat traffic through the inlet. Most suitable for skill development and light-wind training sessions rather than advanced wave riding.
